St Mary’s NS are once agin delighted to be taking part in the UL Academy for Children Programme. The Academy for Children programme at the University of Limerick (UL) is an education access and community engagement initiative run by the UL Access Office. Its main aim is to support primary school children from disadvantaged communities to reach their potential and consider progressing to higher education in the future.

Key aims of the programme

  • To encourage children in DEIS primary schools to believe that university is achievable.
  • To widen participation in third-level education, particularly for groups that are underrepresented in university.
  • To build links between the university and local communities, especially schools in Limerick.
  • To raise aspirations and confidence among pupils by introducing them to university life and learning opportunities.

What the programme involves

The Academy works in partnership with local schools and delivers educational activities and enrichment programmes for pupils, often in 5th and 6th class. These can include:

  • Workshops and educational projects delivered by UL staff or students
  • Subjects such as languages, science or cultural learning
  • Visits to the University of Limerick campus
  • Graduation ceremonies to celebrate participation

The Academy for Children aims to “open doors and expand horizons” by exposing young people to university early and helping them imagine a future pathway into further and higher education.

In short, the programme is about raising educational aspirations, supporting children from disadvantaged backgrounds and strengthening the connection between UL and local schools and communities. Follow us on our socials to see updates of all our activities!!!
