St Mary’s National School is thrilled to announce the launch of a transformative fosse development project at the front of our school on Island Road, funded supported by Limerick City and County Council, the Mayoral Fund and the Local Authority Water Programme. This initiative, which began this week, will convert the green space into a vibrant, ecological paradise, featuring a walkway with stepping stones and colourful native plantings.
This project aligns with our DEIS commitment to inclusion and well-being, enhancing our historic location in Limerick’s medieval quarter near King John’s Castle. Students will participate in planting activities over the coming weeks, fostering hands-on learning in environmental stewardship, creativity, and teamwork— core pillars of our DCU Changemaker School status.
The fosse will serve as an educational resource, enriching our curriculum and supporting initiatives which promotes integration and community engagement.
We are deeply grateful to all the stakeholders involved, Mayor John Moran, Limerick City and County Council and the Local Authority Waters Programme for their generous support. This development will create a welcoming, sustainable space for our students, families, and the wider King’s Island community, embodying our Bí Cineálta ethos of kindness and inclusion.
Mayor of Limerick, John Moran, commented:
“We have a broad strategy in the More for Limerick programme to improve the surrounding areas and provide better amenities and public realm across King’s Island. This project is a step forward towards actioning that plan. It improves access to and enjoyment of our historic walls for young and old alike. By investing in projects like this, we’re putting the pieces of community, history and sustainability neatly together. I can’t wait to see what the pupils of St Mary’s NS make of the new facilities!”
Speaking about the project Eamonn O’Connell, Senior Executive Engineer with the Local Authority Waters programme (LAWPRO) said:
“LAWPRO is pleased to support the development of The Fosse city wall linear NbS Park by Limerick CCC. The incorporation of Nature-based Solutions (NbS) in the project will help protect water quality, improve biodiversity and offer greater resilience to climate change challenges such as increased flood risk. The educational and community engagement opportunities offered by the project are particularly exciting.”
Eoghan O’ Byrne, Principal, St Mary’s National School, added:
“We are thrilled to see the exciting development of a new fosse along Island Road, directly adjacent to St. Mary’s National School. This transformative project, made possible through the generous support of Limerick City and County Council and the Mayoral Fund, represents a significant step forward in enhancing our school’s surroundings and contributing to the ecological health of our community. The fosse will not only beautify the area but also serve as a vital ecological asset that will also provide vital educational opportunities for our school and local community.”
